Loose leaf is a better choice over bagged, as bagged teas often contain particles and powders that are of lower grade herbs. The bag itself may also contain plastics or toxins. Although not always as convenient to prepare, loose-leaf teas are well worth the effort.
A tincture is a concentrated liquid made by extracting herbs in alcohol (known as the menstruum). Tinctures are used for supporting various conditions. Alcohol is one of the best solvents for extracting the medicinal properties from most plants. Tinctures enter the body quickly and bypass digestion, making them effective for delivering plant medicine more rapidly than, for example, capsules, which rely on digestion and metabolism for breakdown. Very young children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or anyone who abstains from alcohol for various reasons can still benefit from herbs by drinking herbal tea or using a glycerite instead of a tincture. A glycerite contains zero alcohol as the herbs are extracted in vegetable glycerine. However, it’s important to note that glycerites extract a much lower amount of herb constituents than tinctures, so they are not nearly as potent.
Our tinctures are extracted in a 40% alcohol. In a basic dropperful, the alcohol present is roughly equal to the alcohol present in a very ripe banana, a glass of commercial orange juice, or a bottle of kombucha.
Some people get a cup of boiling water or tea and add the tincture to it, leaving it uncovered. This is said to help evaporate some of the alcohol in just a few minutes.
Alcohol-based tinctures do not need to be refrigerated. Store in a cool dark place.
Tinctures can be taken directly under the tongue, but if the taste is too strong, you can dilute it in water, tea, honey, or a smoothie. Get to know your body. Some people benefit from just 1 mL at a time, whereas others notice results taking 2-3 mLs at a time. Some tinctures are more of a tonifying tincture (they support a system over a longer period of time). Others are used for acute/sudden onset of symptoms. The dosing difference lies in how they are used. Generally, for tonifying tinctures, people will take a dose or two a day over a longer period. Whereas, if using for acute/sudden onset symptoms, they increase their dose and take it multiple times throughout the day until symptoms subside.
(1 dropperful squeeze = approx 25-30 drops, which equals approx 1 ml. Our droppers are calibrated so you can see how close you’re getting to 1ml.)
The herbs used are generally safe, but to give our bodies a rest, you can always take it during the weekdays then give your body the weekend off. Or, some herbalists suggest taking for 4-6 months, then taking a month down and reevaluating before resuming again.
Our tinctures are extracted in alcohol only and then a small amount of organic vegetable glycerine is added at bottling to make it more palatable.
Most herbalists suggest first researching the herbs in that specific tincture and their safety in children. If deemed safe, the Clark’s rule for dosages in children is calculated based on their body weight. Clark’s formula is: divide the child’s weight (in pounds) by 150, then give the child that fraction of the adult dose. For example, for a 50-pound child, give 50➗150 (or ⅓) of the adult dose. Therefore, if the adult dose is to take 1 ml three times per day, the child’s dose will be .33 ml three times per day. Observe how your child feels and adjust accordingly.
Herbalist John M Scudder wrote, “The dose will vary in different cases, and with different practitioners…I am satisfied that the size of the dose does not make such a difference as has been thought, and that the essential element of success is to get the right remedy.”
If pregnant/breastfeeding/on medication, consult with your doctor or natural healthcare provider first.
Different herbs have different rates of effectiveness. Although some herbs work quite fast (as in our Stomach Tincture), other herbs work steadily and not necessarily overnight (such as our Women’s Balance Tincture.) In order for these herbs to be effective, they work best when used consistently.
Most of the products offered are made with herbs that are generally recognized as safe. We encourage you to do your homework and listen to your body. As we cannot offer medical advice, we recommend consulting your healthcare provider or holistic practitioner to discuss your routine, particularly if you have any underlying health conditions, are on medications, or are pregnant or nursing.
Tinctures can last at least 5-7 years, although we’ve heard people having bottles for 10+ years and they’re still as good and potent as day 1. Salves can last up to a year and a half. Our skincare oils can last at least 1 year from the date of purchase. Our teas are good for 1 year. This is all based on proper storage of items.

Most tinctures are extracted 4-6 weeks. Ours are extracted 8+ weeks, shaken and agitated daily, allowing more time to get the most constituents out of the herbs. Many of the herbs used in our products are grown right on our homestead or purchased at local Farmer’s Markets who certify organic. We never use chemicals or fertilizers. If an herb isn’t grown here, we take great care to source it from suppliers who care just as much as we do about quality.
We make all of our tinctures using an organic, handcrafted vodka. This local vodka comes from a family-owned and operated business using only clean, sustainably grown ingredients. Zero synthetic fertilizers and zero chemicals are used, making a clean product for you, while also protecting our environment and resulting in a low carbon footprint. Made from 100% organic, non-GMO corn, this 40% (80 proof) vodka hasn’t been hit with chemicals most tincture vodkas are made from. Tinctures are taken for our health and wellness. If only the best quality of herbs are used, we find it only fitting to put that much concern into the alcohol they’re extracted in.
At jamaRoots, we have no hidden ingredients. Ever. We list every ingredient because we’re proud of them! We extensively research to source the highest quality ingredients we can find even if it costs us a little more (or a lot more.)

We package our salves, oils, and tinctures in glass jars and bottles. And we are especially proud to package our herbal teas in paper tubes, custom-made by a local supplier here in Cleveland. They worked with us through every meticulous detail to help craft a recyclable, plastic-free container to safely house your teas. Did you know we don’t blend your teas until you order them?! This ensures the freshest batch for your cup!

However, in the event that your item arrives damaged, we kindly ask that you contact us within 7 days of receiving your order. Similarly, if you encounter any issues with your product, please reach out to us within 7 days of receipt, providing detailed descriptions and accompanying photos of the problem. Please be aware that if we do not receive communication from you regarding product issues by the 8th day upon receipt of order, it will be beyond the dispute deadline.

We kindly ask for your understanding in situations where postal service issues occur, such as delays, delivery exceptions, or returned packages due to reasons like incorrect addresses or import fees. These circumstances are unfortunately beyond our control. If such issues arise, we encourage customers to directly contact the relevant postal services or governmental agencies for assistance.
In the event that a package is returned to us, the next step would be for the customer to purchase a new shipping label. This cost would be the responsibility of the customer. It’s important to note that we are unable to offer refunds for these situations. This is because, by that point, we will have already prepared the product fresh to order, compensated our hard-working employees, and allocated the ingredients specifically for the customer’s order.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in these matters. If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to reach out to us.
We are happy to accommodate tax-exempt status. Please reach out to us at keitha@jamaroots.co to request a tax-exempt form, and we will promptly send one for you to complete.
